Optimized material distribution thanks to new nozzle technology
Every painter can choose the nozzle system that suits their own preferences and application technique. Regardless of which nozzle type is selected, the respective fan dimension remains constant across the different nozzle sizes. Only the material throughput changes linearly with the size.
Innovative labyrinth airflow system for outstanding atomisation
The nozzle concept of the jet X is based on the innovative labyrinth airflow system. It guides the air in the nozzle in such a way that it exits each orifice at exactly the same pressure and free of turbulence and pulsation. This enables us to achieve exceptionally fine and homogeneous atomisation – and a new level of surface quality, both for HVLP and RP technology.
I-nozzle “Control“ with HVLP/RP
The “I”, or “Control”, nozzles produce a longer spray pattern with an even material distribution. They have a slower application speed but offer maximum control.
HVLP: Extra Economical – HVLP paint spray guns achieve particularly high transfer rates with their low-pressure technology.
RP: Extra Fast – RP spray guns stand for maximum working speed with optimized high-pressure technology and low overspray.
O-nozzle “Speed” with HVLP/RP
The “O”, or “Speed”, nozzles have an oval fan shape with a larger fade-out zone and a wetter core, which results in a higher application speed.
HVLP: Extra Economical – HVLP paint spray guns achieve particularly high transfer rates with their low-pressure technology.
RP: Extra Fast – RP spray guns stand for maximum working speed with optimized high-pressure technology and low overspray.

our opinion – A spray gun which is ideal for backgrounds, spot repair, blending, shading and touch up. The best selling touch up spray gun.
A spray gun (paint sprayer) is a tool used to spray liquid coatings – paint, varnish and lacquer in particular. The spray gun uses air pressure from a compressor which forces the paint to become a mist (known as atomize), this can be adjusted using the air regulator and material flow control. A spray gun achieves a smooth consistent finish of paint when applied to surface, preparation is very important when wanting to achieve a professional and smooth finish. The better you prep the better the finish.
Used by professionals & commercial spray painters for automotive, industrial & commercial use. For re-spraying cars, commercial vehicles, agricultural machinery and equipment, boats, woods, decorating & upvc. Colour is everywhere and in most cases a paint sprayer (spray gun) would be used with compressed air for application.
What are the benefits to a spray gun?
Using a spray gun with your compressor >> will cover an area much faster with a more consistant finish, though you need to mask >> to protect the surrounding area from overspray. You also need a mask to protect your lungs >>.
Spray Gun Parts and Accessories
When purchasing a spray gun its longevity is usually reflected in the price. Spray gun parts are unlikely to be available with budget models (under £100.00), high end professional finish spray guns usually have all parts and spares available giving future life to your spray gun. The most common parts and in particular atomise the finish required are the Air Cap, Nozzle, Fluid Tip & Needle.
Air Caps explained
The air cap (spray gun head) is paired to the size of the fluid tip & needle and range in sizes (see Fluid Tips & Needle below). The fluid nozzle and needle direct paint to the air cap, paint & airflow creates atomization which can be adjusted according to right application needed.
Fluid Tips & Needle
Spray guns come in different set-ups for different paint types and application.
For small detail and repair fluid tips start from 0.5mm – 1.2mm
For panel & respray 1.3mm – 1.4mm / 1.5mm
Primer & High Build paint 1.8mm – 2.2mm
Thicker Industrial paints & primers 2.2mm – 3.5mm
These are general spraying guides, sprayers do have their own preference. Always consult your paint supplier or technical data sheet for fluid tip application.
(Always test set up and application on small test area before applying to main surface area).
A spray gun when paint spraying can be adjusted and set up to achieve the desired application finish.
Adjusting your spray gun will change atomization and fan pattern, from spot (small application i.e small detail) to – full fan (large application i.e. full re-spray).

Best selling Spray Guns
3M, Anest Iwata, ANi, Binks, DeVilbiss, Sagola & SATA brands offer a wide range of spray guns, all designed for different liquid coatings & applications.
Usually a gravity spray gun, HVLP, LVLP, Compliant and Conventional are options. Full sized and mini/midi spray guns would be selected depending on the scale of work and the size of the compressor.
HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) describes the correct air delivery for modern spray guns, but full HVLP guns doesn’t suit most applications as they produce an uneven, ‘orange peel’ finish. HVLP spray guns mainly suit water-based basecoat car paint.
LVLP (Low Volume Low Pressure) spray guns are designed to operate with less air but also produce a sub-optimal finish. We advise the ANi Compact Spray Gun when less air is available.
Mini/Midi spray gun >> – a popular choice for all compressor size 24 litre (6.34 gallons) and over; there are spray gun options that are capable of even a full respray. Full sized spray gun >> – the typical choice where larger areas are being painted. Usually requires at least 7cfm free air.

Sprayer using the Sagola X 4100 Series Pressure Spray Gun in most cases used for commercial vehicles, trains, coaches, lorries or large panel sections.
Suction spray guns usually come with a 1 litre capacity pot so used if you have a larger surface paint area (old school sprayers some times prefer this method).
For (None Digital) gravity fed spray guns a gauge control is used to regulate the amount of air,
enabling an accurate predictable atomisation (mix of air and paint). Works in combination with spray fan pattern size control (knob adjustment). This means you can work slowly with a small fan or faster with a larger fan.
Air control is usually in conjunction with wall filter regulators.
Assuming you have mixed paint and your spray gun cup is attached the next stage is making sure your air pressure and fan pattern is correct for type of application.
Use your Spray gun air pressure gauge (fig 1.0) and material flow knob (fig 2.0) to adjust the amount of paint and air mixed to form the desired atomization.

Can I use a spray gun (paint sprayer) with my compressor?
Yes, but the compressor size and it’s CFM (Free Air) is what matters.
Large compressor = many spray gun options
Small compressor = mini/midi spray guns.
A 24 litre compressor is suitable for *low free air spray guns or airbrushes* ( < 4.5 cfm).
A 50 Litre compressor would be suitable for most smart repair mini midi spray applications.
A typical full sized spray gun would require a larger compressor > 50 litre.
What compressor do I need to paint a car. How to choose the correct air compressor for my spray gun (paint sprayer)?
Connect the compressor and wait for full working pressure. you can then adjust the pressure via a gun gauge which is connected to your spray gun.
Compressors are measured by their displacement in CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute). Spray guns are measured by the free air they use, the maths is for example a 12cfm displacement less a third equals the free air available.
The simple sum is (12cfm displacement minus 1/3 = 8cfm free air).
How to use a spray gun with an air compressor?
A spray gun that is driven by compressed air must be connected via an airline; it can be directly screwed to a threaded airline but is usually used with quick release connectors.
What connectors do I need to connect my spray gun to air hose and compressor?
What airline and connectors do I need for my spray gun?
Typically 3/8” (8mm) is the minimum airline internal diameter/bore. We recommend using pre-made airline that includes ¼” BSP female threaded nuts at either end.
Quick release connectors screw in to the end of the airline primarily to pair/interconnect with a tail-piece. The spray gun tail-piece would have a female thread.
Male and Female thread (originates from the animal kingdom).
Example: ¼” BSP male thread screws into ¼” BSP female thread and forms a seal. Spray guns and fittings supplied by us in BSP >> with NPT >>
Quick release coupling connectors tube type tails that push in to small barrel like receivers (sometimes confused or described as male and female BUT not in SprayGunsDirect language).
Euro (HVLP) high flow connectors are best practice for use with a spray gun. Traditional / old-fashioned British connectors (often misleadingly referred to as PCL style) do not suit optimal air delivery for a spray gun.
Below shows HVLP connectors used to connect the spray gun to air hose and then to the compressor. This method is quick release which is simple and very easy to use especially when changing devices using compressed air. For a full compressed air system a second air hose would be included along with a filter regulator. Air flow would typicaly follow this direction.
Compressor >> Air Hose >> Filter Regulator (1,2 or 3 stage) >> Air Hose >> Spray Gun Gauge (non-digital) >> Spray Gun
HVLP Explained
High Volume Low Pressure has no restrictions on airflow with a wider male and female connection. This is the choice for most professional paint sprayers.
PCL Explained
PCL Connectors are usually used for air tools such as sanders, polishers, drills and grinders as 100% air flow can differ. The below image shows the Prevost Flexair 10m Hose *British Style PCL Connector* with Prevost Air Blow Gun.
Above image shows (compressor connectors)

With air filtration down to 0.01 microns and activated carbon removing contaminants and odours down to 0.003 ppm for both breathing and spraying. Compressed air filtration is designed to remove liquid, oil and water from flowing compressed air.
For working spray booths filters should be replaced every 3 months.
You must install a wall mounted filter regulator to remove water and oil otherwise paint defects e.g. craters emerge.
A simple solution is to run a 10-metre airline from the compressor to the wall filter then add another line to the outlet to run to the spray gun.
See figure 1.0 (part no. AH117317 for filtration) – showing a typical compressed air configuration.
What filter regulator do I need?
Single stage brings the air down to 0.5 microns which is clean enough to spray with.
Two stage 0.01 micron and greater capacity for long life span. Sufficient for 1-man air fed mask.
Three stage for minimal contaminants including odour; so the ultimate for air fed mask operation.
European made spray guns are the best and Iwata from Japan.
The gun brands that are used by most body shop professionals are ANi (Italian) DeVilbiss (UK except the SLG), SATA (German), Iwata, Sagola (Spain).
Arguments over which is best are common; SprayGunsDirect offer all the main brand contenders. There are characteristics that suit specific requirements that may make direction a no-brainer, but a similar question would be: which is best? BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Jaguar or Lexus?
If you have evolved your style around one and it has worked for you then avoid switching brands unless you have the budget to experiment, we do encourage variety if you want to test drive scenarios, you can always sell on via an online preloved sales platform.
All gun manufacturers have multiple options that go way beyond simplification but if we are going to be forth right and opinionated then here it is. All robust challenges with feedback are welcomed.
ANi – exceptional value for money, the Volkswagen option at Dacia prices. Perfect for beginners and the price conscious. Flagship guns now stand up with the top tier priced options.
DeVilbiss – straightforward and predictable, easy to get started with.
Iwata – often a little slower so patience is its nature and your requirement.
Sagola – the new contender at the upper end. Adapting and evolving existing technology. Fast and full. For the professional in a rush.
SATA – considered precision engineering with dedicated loyalist users. Many bespoke options.
Employees of SprayGunsDirect have been at one time or other users of all five and cannot be shifted from their favourite spray gun brand. We have career sprayers, ex-employees of spray gun manufacturers and ex-managers of body shops resident. We have 3 spray rooms for trials. We test everything. For fully independent guru level testing, reviews and engagement, we recommend the videos section of The Gunman on YouTube.
Firstly, Disconnect the Air and Remove pot lid, pour any left over paint content to a waste container whilst holding the trigger down to release any left material left in the spray gun, pour a small amount of thinners in to the cup swish around in pot, then pull the trigger to spray through spray gun to clean and remove any excess in to a paint can.
Remove the spray gun gauge and pot, clean with thinners or water depending on material.
Clean any excess from air cap whilst on the gun then remove to fully clean, Holding the trigger down to remove needle. Clean with care.
Remove the fluid tip & clean again using small amount of thinners with preferably a brush provided in the Colad Premium Cleaning Kit.
Take time to clean & wipe down the spray gun body and all components, DO NOT leave components to soak in thinners, this is commonly done which damages body seals and components.
Re-assemble using a spray gun lube on needle when re-housing for fluent smooth trigger motion.
The images below show the steps to follow (guide based on gravity spray gun) for cleaning & maintaining your spray gun.
The ANi Compact 1.3mm Spray Gun “The GAME CHANGER”
It’s Small Compressor Friendly* A Midi Gravity Spray Gun – Sprays Custom-Smooth like a £300 gun, the real gem is this Midi Spray Gun performs like a full size Spray Gun with very nice fan pattern consistency for a professional finish.
Our opinion: A compliant (passes transfer efficiency regulation tests) superbly engineered mid sized spray gun with a fan that opens up beyond 20 cm yet runs off a small compressor. The only gun of its type: smooth applier that is engineered to require less air yet at a sensible price. P.S. appealing to owners of even bigger compressors, a game-changer.
